Professor Robert Opoku, Professor of Marketing

Biography

Professor Robert Ankomah Opoku is Professor of Marketing at the Donald School of Business, Red Deer Polytechnic, Alberta. He received his PhD in Marketing from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, and previously held an appointment at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia. He has lived, taught and developed management and marketing courses on four continents. That international exposure has led to extensive consulting for multinational consumer goods and petrochemical companies, including work with Unilever and Henkel, and he continues to provide strategy consulting, training and research as Director of Fredma Business Services Inc. He is a committed champion of service learning, combining course learning outcomes with community service so that students engage directly with community and business leaders and gain real experience with local enterprises — a model of applied education closely aligned with Southshore’s own. His research spans online branding and communication, culture and decision-making, consumer ethnocentrism, place and destination marketing, financial services marketing, and the micro-foundations of entrepreneurial intentions in emerging economies. His work, cited close to 3,000 times, appears in Tourism Management, the Journal of Business Research, Industrial Marketing Management and the Journal of Consumer Behaviour. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship and the African Journal of Economic and Management Studies, and a co-editor of the forthcoming Palgrave Handbook of Strategic Entrepreneurship.
