PhD Statistics

The PhD Statistics programme is aimed at equipping PhD Statistics graduates with the statistical skills needed for their research activities. Depending on a particular research theme, necessary skills may include knowledge of advanced statistical concepts, design of experiments, collection of data, and analysis of data. The following are the three core goals: 1.Demonstrate an understanding of statistical concepts. 2.Demonstrate proficiency in analysing data using appropriate methods. Be proficient with statistical software packages appropriate for needed data analysis.

Entry requirements

  • Candidates with at least a Master’s degree in Statistics can be admitted directly into the PhD programme.
  • Candidate with a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics or Mathematics/Statistics related discipline having CGPA of 3.0 or better, with no more than one grade C+ or lower in Research Methods can be admitted directly into the PhD programme but must audit some selected prescribe courses from the MSc Statistics programme.
  • English language: IELTS 7.0 (no band below 6.5) or equivalent for international applicants
  • A statement of purpose (500-1,000 words) that explains the candidate's motivation for pursuing the PhD Statistics programme, career goals, and how the program aligns with their professional aspirations.
  • All foreign qualifications shall be referred to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission for determination of equivalences and eligibility for admission.
  • Online Graduate Interview
  • Two academic or professional recommendation letters

Graduation requirements

  • Participate in at least four seminars and three conferences Present a dissertation with original research (90 credits) and pass the Viva Voce
  • Present three mandatory seminars Submit all necessary forms to file for graduation
  • Satisfy all financial obligations to the university Complete all degree requirements within the approved timeline
  • Students are encouraged to publish at least one paper.
