Southshore University College, previously known as Dominion
University College, officially marked its grand launch on Saturday, 24
January 2026 at its East Legon campus in Accra. The ceremony brought
together government officials, academic leaders, traditional authorities and
students to celebrate the institution’s transformation into a technology- and
research-driven university with a renewed focus on innovation, African
self-reliance and global competitiveness.
In keynote remarks, Dr. Patrick G. Awuah Jr., Founder
and President of Ashesi University, emphasised the need for ethical,
purpose-driven leadership and authentic institutional rebranding that goes
beyond cosmetic changes. He called on Ghanaian universities to align vision,
identity and experience for meaningful national development.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Felix Nikoi
Hammond, described the launch as a strategic rethinking of higher education one that prepares graduates for a rapidly evolving global economy shaped by
data, digital systems and artificial intelligence.
The ceremony also featured a message from the Ministry of
Education, represented by Deputy Director Dr Fred Kissiedu, who reiterated
government support for academic excellence and encouraged institutions to
prioritise discipline and practical skills.
Southshore’s leadership highlighted the university’s
commitment to producing technically skilled, entrepreneurial graduates rooted
in African values, positioning the institution as a potential lighthouse
for higher education on the continent.
